Hi, all. Welcome back to the Vegetable series. Today, I have cauliflower in watercolor for you all.
This brings back a lot of childhood memories. When I was a child, cauliflower was my favorite. I would call them little trees! And on the other hand, my little brother would hate them (he hates them till date!). So he would transfer all the so called trees into my plate whenever he got a chance. I loved the bonus trees on the other hand!
This particular cauliflower has a beautiful leaf curling around the florets. I love how the leaf is trying to protect the florets!
Unlike the previous sketches in the series, the colors in cauliflower are very subtle and do not need a lot of layers.
The watercolors used are:
1. Burnt umber
2. Yellow ochre
3. Indigo blue
4. Lemon yellow
5. Sap green

So let’s get started!
PART 1- FLORETS
Step 1. Establish clear boundaries between the florets using burnt umber. It is advisable to use a thin brush such as number 1.
Step 2. Give the florets a very light wash of yellow ochre. If you see carefully the right side is pretty much white due to the sunlight. Hence keep the right hand-side white at this stage.
Step 3.Mix some indigo blue to burnt umber and add a very light wash on the shadow areas as shown below.
Just leave the florets for now and move onto the leaves. We can judge them once the leaves are done.
PART 2- LEAVES
Step 1. Give a very light wash of lemon yellow as shown below.
Step 2. Add a thin layer of sap green once the sheet has dried.
Step 3. Mix some indigo blue to sap green for darker tones. Apply this color in thin layers as shown below.
Step 4. Mix some more indigo blue to green in step 3 for a darker shade. Apply this to the darkest areas in the leaves.
Step 5. Add a thin layer of sap green once the details have dried completely.
Step 6. With just a few more layers, the cauliflower will be ready in no time.
